    About Varicose Veins

    Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that appear just beneath the surface of the skin, most commonly in the legs. They are caused by weakened vein walls and valves that allow blood to pool in the veins instead of flowing back to the heart. Here are some of the main causes of varicose veins:

    • Weak Vein Walls: Over time, the walls of your veins can weaken and lose their elasticity. This makes it harder for them to pump blood back to the heart, which can lead to pooling and varicose veins.

    • Damaged Valves: Veins have tiny valves that open and close to keep blood flowing in one direction, towards the heart. If these valves become damaged or weakened, blood can flow backward and pool in the veins, leading to varicose veins.

    • Increased Pressure: Anything that increases pressure in your veins can raise your risk of varicose veins. This includes standing or sitting for long periods, obesity, pregnancy, and wearing tight clothing.

    • Age: As you age, your veins naturally become weaker and lose elasticity, making you more susceptible to varicose veins.

    • Genetics: If you have a family history of varicose veins, you are more likely to develop them yourself.
